Most people think of neurosurgeons as brain surgeons. However, neurosurgeons are medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders of the entire nervous system. Functional neurosurgery is a fast-growing subspecialty and is being highlighted this August in celebration of Neurosurgery Outreach Month. Functional neurosurgery encompasses many neurosurgical interventions that can enhance the quality of life for patients with a wide range of neurological diseases and conditions. These include epilepsy and related seizure disorders, Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other movement disorders, intractable pain, spasticity, and several psychiatric disorders.
