AANS Public Service Announcements
During the week of the 2009 AANS Annual Meeting, a 60-second PSA, featuring AANS 2008-2009 President James R. Bean, MD, aired on 450 radio stations across the country. While the content relates to the injury prevention theme of 2009 National Neurosurgery Awareness Week, the message is evergreen and an important one to share with the public year round. Included is the AANS recommendation to wear an approved, properly-fitting helmet, especially for all wheeled sports, and to follow simple safety tips – to help prevent potentially tragic or fatal injuries.
"Be Hard Headed!"
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) developed two Public Service Announcements (PSAs) to help educate the public about the importance of wearing a helmet when bike riding, skiing, rollerblading, and other outdoor activities, to help prevent spinal cord, head and neck injuries. In 2008, more than 70,000 people were treated at U.S. hospital emergency rooms for head injuries related to bike riding. The two PSAs were distributed to consumer publications nationwide including: People,
Parenting, Good Housekeeping, Sports Illustrated, Time, Men's Health, and Redbook, to name a few. The PSA was published in AARP
The Magazine and Vigor.
